BE PART OF THE ABERCORN BLUE CARBON INITIATIVE
Responsibility is at the core of what we do. Our Blue Carbon Initiative is in line with the Hong Kong Seagrass Restoration Association’s efforts to promote seagrass work both locally and internationally. When you choose our packaging solutions, you’re also choosing to be part of a meaningful, globally recognised initiative.
SEAGRASS SUPERPOWER
The science behind the Blue Carbon Initiative revolves around the remarkable “superpowers” of seagrasses. These unique underwater plants have an incredible ability to capture and store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, a process known as “carbon sequestration.” Think of seagrasses as the superheroes of the ocean; they combat climate change by locking away harmful carbon dioxide safely in the underwater soil. By restoring and protecting these vital seagrass meadows, the Blue Carbon Initiative aims to harness their natural powers to create a healthier, more sustainable planet.
Our 6 step action plan:
Assessment and Planning
Objective: To conduct a comprehensive, quantitative assessment of the potential for carbon sequestration in targeted coastal ecosystems, specifically seagrass meadows.
Activities: Initial surveys and studies to identify suitable areas for restoration and to estimate the amount of carbon that can be sequestered.
Restoration and Replanting
Objective: To restore and replant 6 hectares of seagrass meadows.
Activities: Intensive fieldwork involving the transplantation of seagrass, monitoring of growth, and seed bank germination.
Monitoring and Data Collection
Objective: To track the progress of the restoration efforts and measure the amount of carbon being sequestered.
Activities: Continuous surveys, sampling, and laboratory work to measure carbon sequestration rates.
Community and Stakeholder Engagement
Objective: To raise awareness about the benefits of Blue Carbon and the role of ecological restoration & seagrasses in reducing CO2 emissions.
Activities: Outreach activities, workshops, citizen science projects, and social media and press releases.
Science & Reporting
Objective: To rigorously explore the science behind seagrass carbon sequestration.
Activities: Periodic progress reports detailing activities, achievements, and carbon sequestration metrics, culminating in publication of peer reviewed scientific paper based on the project’s 3-year duration.
Future Plans and Partnerships
Objective: To secure long term funding and support to scale up Seagrass Restoration efforts to more areas in Hong Kong & the Greater Bay Area in southern China.
Activities: Abercorn & its partners are committed to funding the project for an initial 3-year period and will work with Government authorities and other partners to secure funding to expand the project’s scope and scale.
